I have
come across many Kleptomaniac stories in the movies and television
shows. I always wondered if anyone can really have such illness and a part of
my mind said that this is just another science fiction. But hey!!!! Nope….. We
recently came across a big group of Kleptomaniacs.
Just for quick reference,
Kleptomania is considered as an ICD (Impulse Control Disorder) which makes
people want to steal items. Kleptomaniac people lose their control and cannot
resist the impulse to steal. For many of them getting to steal something gives
a great relief of pressure as if you just completed your toughest exam. In
majority of the cases, the stealing is not done for any personal or financial
gain, they steal just because they cannot stop themselves from stealing. It
sounds fascinating until you are a victim or Kleptomania itself or the
Kleptomaniacs.
Parents were visiting us from
back-home and as usual time flew the fastest it could. It was time for them to return.
We bought some goodies to send with them such as candy bars, nail polishes, lip
sticks, ladies purses, body sprays, jeans and T-shirts, you mention…. I mean
all those regular items so that they could give these little souvenirs to our
loved ones back in the country.
Mom was extremely cautious to
make sure every single bag was locked and things are hidden underneath as much
as possible. We were trying to convince her that the US Customs
will open all these locks…. so do not bother…. but nope! She was determined!
The endless and mostly red-eye
flights, long layovers, “bad” food, hungry stomach and sleepless eyes is all I
can tell about these Kathmandu <--> US flights.
So, they landed at KTM airport and collected the luggage. First things first, mom
checked the luggage locks, they were all broken.
Those kleptomaniacs did steal
most of the goodies. They did not touch any clothes or whatsoever but anything
that would fit into their pockets were gone. Mom was really upset, she was
worried that she now does not have her grand-daughter’s favorite candies, nail
polish with the color of her liking, we were upset too, but what can be done?
I would not know if they were
male or female, I am picturing the person as a male as we have fewer female
workers in the KTM airport. I have since been wondering why someone would take a risk of his job
to steal some 50 bucks worth of things. How would that guy take those candy
bars home and let his kids enjoy? Is it necessary that his kids get to eat
those "foreign" candy bars even though he has to steal them? Honestly I wouldn't be able to look at my kids eyes and say
here!! dad bought some candies for you….while knowing in my heart that I stole
them. I would have given the guy a high 5 if he had stolen a book and have his
kids read it! I feel sad for his kids…..
The kids will chew the candies
and poop the next day, it’s gone but this guy’s deeds are going to stay with
him forever. The same thing with the other items he stole. I do not think he
and his family will use all of those things themselves after all, he keep stealing
every day and keeps bringing those things home. All his near and dear ones getting such gifts from him will definitely know he did not buy those gifts, they know he
stole it. I can already visualize the grins on their face as soon as he leaves.
I would really love to see him!! Just to look at the poor little face smiling
when he gets to break into one more luggage.
Really speaking, the person who enjoyed stealing things off our luggage did not make any financial nor
personal gain. He still wants to steal means technically he is a kleptomaniac.
But I do not have any mercy on him. We have been hearing this gruesome truth
about our airport workers time and again. Anyone who manages to get a transfer
to work at the airport eventually gets kleptomania. It’s contagious, it’s
happening in mass…
So, this is to all the
researchers working on kleptomania, do you still believe kleptomania does not
transmit? Well I have presented you a case of Contagious Mass Kleptomania.
